20 March 2012 Last updated at 19:27 GMT  By Jonathan Amos Science correspondent, BBC News  The geology of the region is no friend to Venice Venice is continuing to sink, albeit at a relatively slow rate of about 2mm a year, new satellite measurements show.

The famous City of Water in north-east Italy experienced major subsidence in the last century due to the constant extraction of water from below ground.

That was stopped and subsequent studies in the 2000s suggested the decline had been arrested.

But work by a US and Italian team indicates Venice is still descending, even tilting to the east slightly.

With waters rising in the Venetian lagoon also by about 2mm (0.08in) a year, the combined effect is a 4mm-a-year increase in sea level with respect to the land.

The city is already subjected to regular floods, which require citizens sometimes to walk on raised boards.

These floods, however, should be better constrained by a new system of barriers set for completion in 2014.

The value of the latest data is in how it helps local authorities plan defences much further into the future, says team-member Yehuda Bock from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in California.

"It's critical information that they need to take into account," he told BBC News.

Powerful duo

Dr Bock worked on the Venice project with colleagues from the University of Miami in Florida and Italy's Tele-Rilevamento Europa, a company that specialises in the measurement of ground movement from space-borne sensors.

The team used a combination of GPS and satellite radar to map how Venice and its lagoon were shifting over time.

Venice barriers The new barriers should protect Venice for decades

Scientific GPS receivers will provide very precise point measurements. These can then be used to "anchor" the relative changes in height discernable across the whole region from repeat radar snapshots.

Dr Bock explained: "GPS gives the absolute movement with respect to the Earth, which is important for subsidence.

"And the radar gives basically how points in an area move relative to each other. Put the two together and you get thousands of points on the ground that are tied into an absolute reference frame."

The analysis indicated that the city through the 2000s was subsiding on average by 1-2mm a year, with some other lagoon locations dropping by up to 3-4mm per year.

No-one can really state how the trend will behave in the future, but if the current rates of subsidence and sea level rise are maintained, the city can expect to drop up to 80mm (3.15in) with respect to the average height of the water in the lagoon over the next 20 years. The new inflatable gates should be able to handle this, though.

Tectonic certainty

Longer-term, Venice is always likely to have a problem, says Dr Bock's group.

Large-scale geological processes are pushing the ground on which the city sits down and under Italy's Apennine Mountains. And although subsidence from groundwater pumping is no longer an issue for Venice, compaction of sediments under the built environment will remain a factor for some time, the scientists say.

"Venice is always on the move," Dr Bock told BBC News."

"It's been diminished as far as the annual rate is concerned, but there is a natural component of the subsidence that has to do with the tectonics, so no matter what they did by stopping the groundwater pumping, they're still going to have a natural subsidence on the order of about up to 2mm a year.

"The figure is a little larger than many were expecting, so I think they may end up using these new barriers more often than they thought."

The GPS/radar study is to be published next week in Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, a journal of the American Geophysical Union (AGU).

A report from Interaksyon that Globe Telecom has pulled out the sale of the Tattoo 4G Tonino Lamborghini stick from the market prompted me to follow up on the story.

So I went to one of the stores of Globe this afternoon to inquire about the Tonino Lamborghini 4G Stick and was assured the product/service is still available for subscription.

I had to double-check that so I visited their website and applied for the Plan 2199 and it was processed. The Plan 2199 and Tonino Lamborghini product page are still up and accepts applications.

Just to triple-check, I asked a friend to inquire from @talk2globe this evening regarding the same and they responded (at 9:18PM):

@talk2globe: Hi! It’s available at the following Globe stores only: SM Megamall SM North SM (cont) http://tl.gd/csia41

The issue started around 2 weeks ago when Tonino Lamborghini sent out a press release denouncing the Tattoo 4G stick that’s being marketed by Globe.

So it looks like business as usual for Globe Telecom and the Tonino Lamborghini 4G stick. I’m not sure though how that story from Interaksyon came about (either the order from above got delayed or the licensing has been finally fixed and settled).

Update 1:
GMANews followed up on my story and confirmed with Globe that the Tattoo Lamborghini stick wasn’t pulled out of the market.

Update 2: Don Ronquillo of Globe Telecom tweeted this today — “To clarify, the very controversial Tattoo Tonino Lamborghini Stick wasn’t pulled out fr the mkt. It’s still available in selected MM stores.“

Wil Time Bigtime has toppled all competing programs during its timeslot last Saturday (August 13), according to Nielsen Media Research.

The people’s show managed to get a 6.5% AMR or 28.8% audience share in MegaTam, compared to ABS-CBN’s ratings by daypart of 4.9% AMR (21.3% share) and GMA’s 5.8% AMR (25.3% share).

Among all game-variety shows, Wil Time Bigtime was the most watched last Saturday; generating the highest number of viewers in nationwide urban TV. Based on Nielsen’s NuTam data last Saturday (August 13), Wil Time Bigtime generated almost 2.7 million viewers as compared to ABS-CBN’s The Price is Right with only 2.1 million viewers. Moreover, Wil Time Bigtime captured almost 400,000 more viewers versus GMA’s Manny Many Prizes, which only posted an average of 2.3 million viewers nationwide.

But despite the show’s continuous success in the ratings game, Willie Revillame (or Kuya Wil as he is fondly called by millions of Filipinos who love him) is still in awe that even after years of dealing with a multitude of stories from different individuals via his TV programs, stirring accounts are still waiting to be told. Take for example when they featured differently-abled people in Wil Time Bigtime segment recently—a very first for Kuya Wil since he ventured into TV hosting.

All the way from Baguio—with only their 5-year-old daughter serving as their eyes throughout their commute—a blind married couple traversed the chilly road of the north at two in the morning and made it to the audition venue in Quezon City just before noon. JR, a blind massage therapist, was selected to join the segment where at least P3.5 million worth of prizes are at stake. But during the interview portion with Kuya Wil, JR and wife Shirley were too modest to accept too much money from Kuya Wil. For the Wil Time Bigtime host, it’s not every day that people refuse money they think is beyond what they needed. Instead of the usual P5,000 he hands to a contestant, he gave JR a total of P37,000. “Kahit hindi na po ako manalo ngayon malaking tulong na po ‘to. Hindi ko na hangad na makuha ang jackpot,” JR said, his voice cracking in emotion. He added that he would use the money to start a small vegetable buy-and-sell enterprise in Baguio.

The Wil Time Bigtime host admitted that the blind masseur’s character gave him a personal awakening. “Alam mo, JR, inspirasyon kayo sa’ming mga normal na tao. Inspirasyon kayo sa’min na minsan marami pang hinahangad sa buhay, marami pang hinihingi. Pero samantalang kayo simple lang,” Kuya Wil said. “Napakaswerte namin na naging bisita namin kayong lahat kasi namumulat kami kung gaano kahalaga ang tunay na pagmamahal sa kapwa.” Apart from giving him P37,000, Kuya Wil vowed that Wil Time Bigtime would arrange the family’s transportation back to Baguio.
