ABS-CBN soars high on primetime TV.

More households in the Philippines tune in to ABS-CBN to be entertained and informed especially when TV levels peak at its highest during primetime from 6 PM to 12 midnight.

Data from Kantar Media showed that ABS-CBN remains to be the number one TV network with a national audience share of 43 percent in August primetime or a whopping 13-point lead over GMA’s 30 percent.

Advertisers, which invest majority of their TV ad spending on primetime, look at the TV ratings and audience shares of programs and TV networks to place their TV commercials in order to reach more households as frequently and efficiently as possible.

ABS-CBN programs secured 13 out of the top 15 most-watched programs in the country, making it the top choice for advertisers to put their advertising budget.

The multi-awarded and longest running drama anthology in Asia “MMK” (33.7%) hosted by ABS-CBN President Charo Santos-Concio took the top spot followed by weekday top-rater “100 Days to Heaven” (31%) and the recently concluded top-caliber action-drama series “Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin” (30.9%).

“TV Patrol” also ruled all newscasts in the country and secured the sixth spot with an average national rating of 28.6% as compared to its rival “24 Oras” with only 19.5%.
Newly premiered programs “My Binondo Girl” (28%), “Junior Masterchef Pinoy Edition” (27.8%), and “Maria La Del Barrio” (22.6%) also fared well on its pilot airings and instantly rose to ranks of the monthly top 15.

Other Kapamilya programs in top 15 most-watched programs nationwide for August are “Pilipinas Got Talent (Sunday)” (29.5%), Pilipinas Got Talent (Saturday)” (28.6%), “Guns and Roses” (27%), “Rated K” (26.3%), “Mula sa Puso” (23.5%), and “Junior Masterchef Pinoy Edition: The Appetizer” (22.9).
ABS-CBN obtained a national TV audience share of 36% in August, higher than GMA’s 35%.

Kantar Media has 22 TV networks, ad agencies, and pan-regional networks subscribing to its ratings services. Among its current subscribers are ABS-CBN, NBN, Sky Cable, J. Romero and Associates, Adformatix, Starcom, OMD, PhD, Mediacom, Mindshare, MEC, Maxus, Universal McCann, and Wellmade Manufacturing Corporation. They also include pan-regional networks likes CSM Media Inc., Fox International Channels, Star HK, Discovery, AXN, HBO, MTV, and Sony Pictures Television International.

ABS-CBN shifted to Kantar Media/TNS after filing a case vs. AGB Nielsen Media Research for failing to comply with its request to investigate alleged cheating and data tampering in TV ratings. The case is still pending in court.

ABS-CBN registered a consolidated net income of P976 million in the first three months of 2011, while GMA Network reported a P534 million net income in the same period.

ABS-CBN’s earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization or EBITDA hit P2.1 billion in the first quarter of 2011 while GMA Network’s EBITDA was P926 million. ABS-CBN delivered consolidated revenues of P6.6 billion from advertising and consumer sales.

For almost three months, the Biggest Loser Pinoy Edition contestants Raffy Tan and Hazel Chua had consoled and encouraged each other as they faced the physical and emotional challenges inside the Biggest Loser camp.

But after Hazel was eliminated from the competition last Tuesday (August 9), they have to continue transforming their lives, separately and by themselves.

The 22 year-old was voted out by majority of the remaining Bigating Pinoy including Angela, Art, Ryan, and Larry. They said Hazel is more ready to go out of the camp than Winwin, who joined her in the elimination ceremony.

As Angela put it, Hazel is already a butterfly while the 18 year-old Winwin is still sleeping in her cocoon. The two fell below the yellow line during the weigh-in after gaining a pound each despite their strenuous marine camp training.

Larry, whose “six-pack” is starting to show, was declared the Biggest Loser of the week for shedding three lbs. or 1.59% of his previous weight.

Before the tearful elimination ceremony, Raffy kissed Hazel, who served as his inspiration inside the camp. Their parting was painful but it did solidify the trust they have for each other.

Hazel even said she is confident that Raffy will prevail as the program’s first Biggest Loser. “I believe so much in Raffy and I know he’ll do everything to be the first winner of the Biggest Loser Pinoy Edition,” she said.

She also vowed to go through an extreme transformation to wow the campers and the program’s loyal followers in the grand finale. However, Hazel said that as early as now she can say she’s already a changed person.

“The BL camp really changed how I view life. I can now walk with my head up and not try to hide my face in shame. I’m a more disciplined and a much happier person now because I feel good inside and out,” she revealed.

While life goes on for Hazel, same goes for Raffy and the remaining Bigating Pinoys Andy, Art, Angela, Larry, Leigh, Ryan, and Winwin. On this round, they are faced with a tough challenge from game master Derek Ramsay that tests not just their discipline in training and eating, but also in strategizing.

For this week’s immunity, the contenders will race each other in dropping 2% of their current weight. They will be given a one-time-only weigh-in access card, so they will have to gauge themselves to be sure they’ve already lost enough weight before they stand on the weighing scale.

Making this week even tougher for them is a new rule during the weigh-in. Instead of two, four Bigating Pinoys will fall under the yellow line and undergo the elimination ceremony.

Find out the different tactics the Bigating Pinoys will employ to acquire immunity and avoid being booted from the camp. Watch how they will handle another unanticipated twist that will intensify the competition even more.

The peso climbed yesterday to its strongest level in 39 months, breaching the P41 to $1 level, as investors cheered the announcement by US President Barack Obama about the end of the debt deadlock that could have triggered a default and a downgrade of the triple A credit rating of the US.

The peso gained 21.5 centavos to P41.925 yesterday from Friday’s closing of P42.140.

The local currency hit an intra-day high of P41.90 as volume was heavy at $899.3 million from $844.87 million last Friday.

This was the highest level for the peso since closing at P41.87 on April 21, 2008.

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Amando Tetangco Jr. said in an interview that the foreign exchange market would remain volatile not only because of developments in the US but in Europe as well.

“The peso has breached the 42-to-the-dollar level. It’s trading at P41.925 so it has even appreciated given the problems not only in the US but also in Europe,” Tetangco stressed.

He pointed out that the exchange rate is being affected by positive sentiments with respect to the Philippines, together with the other emerging markets, of continued economic growth that is faster than the advanced economies.

“In terms of the foreign exchange market, I think that what’s going to happen is there could be some volatility in the exchange rate. No one really knows how this problem is going to affect financial markets around the world,” he added.

The Libyan government is appealing to Filipino workers, who escaped from the March uprisings there, to come back to their jobs now that the situation has become ‘peaceful and calm.’

But the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs was not about to lift the OFW deployment ban to Libya, maintaining that the agency remains at “alert level four” to force Filipinos to keep on evacuating Libya.

On Monday, Libyan Foreign Ministry Immigration Undersecretary Abdulhadi Al-Huwaid called on Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario to tell him that Libya is now safe for redeployment of Filipino workers.

More than 9,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), most of whom are engineers and highly skilled workers employed by oil companies, returned to Philippines as of April this year in the wake of the uprisings in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.

At least four Filipino domestic workers who have been working here for more than 20 years have waged a legal battle for the Hong Kong government to grant them permanent residency.

The High Court is scheduled to hear one of the three petitions on Aug. 22, which was filed by Evangeline Vallejos, a domestic worker here since 1986.

The two other petitioners are Irene Domingo and her husband Daniel, who worked here as domestic workers from 1982 to 2007 and from 1985 to 2007, respectively. Two of their three children who were born here are already permanent residents.

Josephine Gutierrez, who had been working here as a domestic worker since 1991, also filed a similar petition.

The Court is set to hear the petition of the Domingos on Oct. 18 and of Gutierrez on Oct. 26.

In their petitions filed at the Court of First Instance last December, the Filipinos asked the Court to declare them as permanent residents of this city under the Basic Law.

The Basic Law, the city’s mini-constitution, states that permanent residents include non-Chinese nationals who have “ordinarily resided in Hong Kong for a continuous period of not less than seven years and have taken Hong Kong as their place of permanent residence.”

The Filipino domestic workers also asked the court to declare as unconstitutional the Immigration Ordinance that refuses permanent residency rights to domestic helpers.

Eboy Bautista, one of the world’s heaviest Biggest Loser contestants in history, was eliminated Monday (August 1) from the “Biggest Loser Pinoy Edition.”

He was voted out by fellow Bigating Pinoys in the elimination ceremony after falling under the yellow line with former teammate Winwin.

Obviously bothered by an injury he got during the last challenge, the 33-year-old restaurant owner only managed to sweat out four pounds or 1.03 percent of his previous weight in his last weigh-in. He lost a total of 97 lbs. in his stay in the camp.

Although disappointed with his early finish in the competition, Eboy said he remains positive that he will be down to his ideal weight sooner or later.

“There was still so much to learn in the camp. But aside from getting ousted, I have no regrets. I had a total experience. From all the body aches to my hand accident, I wouldn’t trade those moments for anything,” he said.

Right now he is focused on maintaining a healthy lifestyle and even encouraging his friends and family to also have one. He wants to prove that nothing is impossible even with overweight people like him.

“I learned from Art that you can do things, especially exercise, if you just stop thinking and actually stand up and do it. Like our trainer Chinggay said, never say you can’t until you try. You are stronger that you think you are,” shared the camp’s resident funnyman.

As for his bet to win the title, Eboy said anyone has a fight to become the first Pinoy Biggest Loser. “After Alan left, I really felt I would be the one. Now, looking at those who were left, anyone can be the Biggest Loser,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the remaining Bigating Pinoy Andy, Angela, Art, Hazel, Larry, Leigh, Raffy, Ryan, and Winwin are now experiencing a different kind of training after being brought to a military camp.

There they get a taste of what Marines undergo to remain fit and discipline such as getting up and sleeping early, taking a bath in 100 counts, eating “Marine-style” and also rappelling.

From the get-go, some of them expressed resentment on the manner they are being treated by their “trainer” for the week, Staff Sgt. Pasco. According to Art, who experienced violence growing up, he doesn’t like being shouted and ordered upon. Larry, on the other hand, was excited to try on the drills he used to do as a former policeman.

Can the bigating Pinoy keep up with the pressure and discipline of a military training? Don’t miss the exciting big challenge this week with game master Derek Ramsay. Fighting for immunity in the coming weigh-in, all contestants are expected to give their all in the challenge

Also find out the romantic reward that Angela will get as the Biggest Loser of the week, the first female to be named so. Watch “The Biggest Loser Pinoy Edition,” after “Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin” on ABS-CBN’s Primetime Bida ng ABS-CBN.
