Hewlett-Packard and Oracle are at odds over Itanium support and the former appears to be taking the body blows.

In June, HP filed a civil lawsuit in the Superior Court of California in Santa Clara to force Oracle to support the Itanium platform. In March, Oracle had said it would stop supporting HP's Itanium platform because Intel planned to shut it down in the long run. HP and Intel both denied Oracle's claims. The two parties last month exchanged courtroom jabs over Itanium support.

Now it appears that Oracle's Itanium decisions are impacting sales of HP's mission-critical systems. From a buyer perspective, putting off a purchase makes sense. Why would an Oracle shop buy an Itanium based-system if support was uncertain going forward?

Yesterday, HP CEO Leo Apotheker--amid a massive corporate revamp--acknowledged that the Itanium flap was hurting business. Apotheker said:

Revenue in business critical systems declined 9 percent year over year. This decline is sharper than expected as our ability to close deals has been impacted by Oracle's decision and orders are being delayed or canceled. We are working diligently to enforce the commitments that Oracle has made to our customers and to HP.

Apotheker referenced Oracle a few times in regards to Itanium. He also said that HP was taking Oracle to court over "anti-customer behavior." It's unclear where this Itanium spat goes ultimately, but for now the flap is freezing sales of Itanium-based systems.

17 August 2011 Last updated at 23:01 GMT Sweet shop Spoilt for choice: TOA Technologies CTO Irad Carmi says he is like "a child in a candy store", with a host of new mobile technologies to work with Each week we ask high-profile technology decision-makers three questions.

This week it is Irad Carmi, chief technology officer (CTO) of TOA Technologies.

TOA Technologies provides on-demand mobile workforce management applications for large and medium-sized enterprises. The company has approximately 250 employees worldwide, and is headquartered in the United States with offices in Europe and Latin America.

Irad Carmi TOA Technologies' Irad Carmi says context awareness is the next tech change on the horizon What's your biggest technology problem right now?

My problem is that of a child in a candy store - what to pick first.

I mean mobile developments. The rapid advancement of mobile technology is electrifying.

There's so much happening, new technology, new features, new devices, therefore so many new opportunities.

For us as a technology company that provides mobile solutions it's pretty amazing. It's a question of what do we do first.

So far we have done some very interesting things. For example we allow mobile employees to do everything in a mobile browser, even if they're not connected to the network. And even if the battery dies, they can restart the device, set the browser and continue to work.

These are things that could not even be dreamt of a couple of years ago - and we see it as just the beginning.

What's the next big tech thing in your industry?

It's definitely context awareness. What I mean by that is basically using computers as the intelligent machines we all hoped they would be.

If you think about it today computers are extremely powerful, and offer us a lot of choices. But they always wait for us to make that choice.

Basically we need to tell the computer what our problem is and they will help us solve it.

Context awareness is the ability to intelligently decide what the user needs, based on their location and the context of what they are doing.

This allows us technologists to create applications that are smart, that can basically anticipate what is expected of them and be significantly more helpful and more user-friendly.

The best example is social networking.

It provides people with the ability to communicate freely at any time to any size of crowd.

If you think about the workplace, especially the mobile workplace which is what our company serves - if you are aware of the context of what you're doing, and where you are, it can make this communication over social networking much more effective as a work tool.

It's not just telling them about the weather or the last movie I saw, but actually asking for help with a specification you need to solve, or posing a problem that many people need to know about.

So that's the direction we see technology heading. Taking existing features and making them context aware.

Technology of Business What's the biggest technology mistake you've ever made - either at work or in your own life?

I love this question! I have a great example from my personal life.

I am a classical musician by training, and I listen to music a lot.

In the late 90s my wife and I saw an ad for a music store that was getting rid of its vinyl LP collection.

Because then digital technology was taking over, and the world had already moved to the CD. But the quality of LPs is significantly superior to CDs, even to this day.

We thought great! We went to the store and bought 10 big opera albums, new and plastic-wrapped.

Those big shiny orginally-wrapped opera albums are still on my shelf, I've never opened them.

Because the truth is that when technology changes in the world, there's no way back.

Hopefully one day I will figure out the machinery and the time to listen to those wonderful operas.

But the lesson learned that applies to my profession as a CTO is that my job is to figure out not just what's good now, but also which way the world is heading in terms of technology, and making sure that what we do as a company is always relevant.

Aug. 1: A U.N. representative says that famine in the Horn of Africa is spreading and may soon engulf as many as six more regions in Somalia. The number of people in urgent need of food could keep growing over the next three or four months. NBC's Kate Snow reports from Dadaab, Kenya.

By Kate Snow, NBC News Correspondent

DADAAB, Kenya – Osman Ali is a tall man who walks with purpose. He has the gait of someone who’s done a lot of walking in his life.

No surprise – he is a herder. Or rather, he was. Most of the Somali refugees here in Dadaab have left behind a nomadic lifestyle involving goats, cattle or crops.

"I had 40 camels, 30 goats and 60 cattle," he told me proudly as we walked the red-dirt path back to his temporary hut on the outskirts of the Ifo refugee camp in Dadaab. Not anymore. When the drought hit, his livestock died of starvation, one by one. Eventually, he had no way to make a living for his large family. (Ali has two wives with 11 children between them).

With no other alternative, Ali gathered his own family and some of his siblings and their families. The entire clan set out from Dinsor, Somalia, on foot. It took them 20 days and 20 nights of walking to reach the camp.

Ali says they were lucky none of the women were hurt or brutalized along the journey. There have been many reports of rape and sexual violence against the women who have been forced to flee their homes in Somali to reach refugee camps in northern Kenya.

But he did lose a nephew who died of hunger as they made the long trek.

Home now is a tent he built out of branches, covered in plastic bags. When he invited me inside, I had to duck and watch out for thorns. The entire hut was about 8 feet in diameter – the size of a two-person backpacking tent. Ali is living there with one of his wives and six children.

As we walked in, I jumped back. A 2-year-old was barely visible, asleep on the ground. I nearly stepped on her. She was tinier than a 2-year-old should be.

I asked Ali how long he thinks he can live like this. He shrugged. "This is the situation we’re in," he said. "We have to live here."

"We have no choice," he said. And then he rubbed his thumb and fingers together, the universal sign for money. No money.

Yes, he is angry. But he is also resigned, tired and hungry.

Despite that hunger, the Ali clan is observing the traditional Ramadan fast. They won’t eat at all until sundown. And then the women will prepare dinner for everyone.

This afternoon they hauled back their first rations of oil and flour after being processed at the refugee camp. The rations are supposed to be enough to last three weeks. Ali believes it won’t last that long. They have to share their supply with other members of their clan who have none. It is, he said, the right thing to do.

See more of Kate Snow's reporting on the famine in East Africa on Nightly News tonight.
