Retailers On The Internet Are Gearing Up

The Holiday Season is fast approaching and although there’s good reason to be skeptical with the economy pointing to anything but a big retail season, there are some bright spots as far as ecommerce goes. Remember that in Q2 for this year alone, $34 billion has been spent online according to comScore.

That means while more traditional methods of buying and selling goods and services are feeling the effects of the recent market tumbles and general problems, commerce on the web has been forging ahead with record sales thanks in part to new interactive marketing strategies that gather in social media, search engine optimization (seo) and well written content.

One recent example of an online retailer that’s making a big splash noted their strategy took a few different approaches. The fashion house’s campaign started with the traditional underpinning that’s not likely to change soon for any company looking for great internet based sales—the website. Of course, the website has evolved from a collection of static pages with keyword stuffed content, and the demand for interactive copy that began with social media was the catalyst that changed all that.

In the case of the fashion house in question, shoppers can look through the inventory of what the company has to offer, read values added articles about the latest trends, and even buy the products all from the same website.

What’s also important is they have created a mobile app and a mobile version of the experience because following the trends is essential when it comes to selling on the web.

In related news, there are reports internet advertising in all its forms is taking hold in places where you might not expect. In some parts of the Arab world, Internet advertising has started to make inroads, accounting for 9% of the total revenue but still far behind more traditional methods like television and newspapers. The Omnicom Media Group (OMG) has reported the method will account for US$170 million (Dh624.43m) this year. It might not sound like big numbers, but The National, the Abu Dhabi Media company’s first English-language publication, is helping the process along by being a professional, well written English language newspaper in the UAE and reporting on Internet advertising’s climb.

Still not everything is as good as it seems for all internet based companies. Google has been downgraded by the same people that dropped the credit rating of the American Government. It seems their purchase of Motorola Mobility is causing some concern in what’s looking like a brewing war in application patents.

Internet jobs for developing world workers

So mothers have a very difficult choice to make."

When Sangeeta Thomas's husband decided to change jobs, the family moved to city of Mangalore.

She left her job as a customer care executive for HSBC and American Express behind - but with an 18-month-old to look after her job prospects were now limited.

"Either you have grandparents at home, or you have maids to take care of babies and children, otherwise only mothers take care of children. They either choose work or they choose home.

"It's very difficult for working women. They have to compromise with their family life."

She started looking for something she could do at home. While browsing the internet Mrs Thomas came across an article with links to freelancing websites.

These services - Freelancer.com, Elance, oDesk and the like, allow people to sign up and bid for freelance projects.

With each successfully completed project, employers can post reviews. The more positive reviews you have, as you gain reputation, the better your chances of securing more highly paid work become.

Sangeeta Thomas: "Without the internet, working from home isn't really feasible."

Initially suspicious, she chose a copywriting project advertised on Freelancer.com and began bidding.

"The price of the project was very low - but I wanted to see if the site was genuine.

"It was only 35c for a 200 word article. It took me almost 30 days to complete that project and to make $30, so that I could get it paid into my bank account.

"I realised it was genuine. I was very happy - it was exactly what I was looking for, something that gives me the freedom to work from home, to take care of my son, as well as being financially independent."

As she gained good reviews, Mrs Thomas says she was able to bid for much better paid projects and now earns significantly more than she did in her former role.

Hard realities

These are services that continue to attract controversy in the developed world.

In the same way that the outsourcing of call centres and production work has been blamed for job losses, so these services have been accused of pushing down rates of pay for workers in developed countries.

Critics also claim that the quality of the work done by those bidding at the lower end of the spectrum can be variable.

These are issues that are unlikely to be readily resolved.

But what does this mean for those in the developing world, where wages are lower and opportunities few and far between?

Only about 30% of the population of the world currently has internet access. But this is a figure that is rising rapidly.

With online access, comes the opportunity to look beyond their local area for work. A lower cost of living, lack of a welfare safety net and poverty can all make workers from the developing world significantly cheaper than their first world counterparts.

New independence Job Otieno: "People in Kenya still believe in white collar jobs, working in an office"

Job Otieno is 29 years old, and lives in Nairobi in Kenya.

He has been freelancing for nearly a year. He says working from home has given him freedom without the need to find the up-front funding to start a new business.

"This was more friendly in terms of business, and it also gave me the opportunity to do something I really like in terms of writing.

"Initially when I started I was actually writing technical articles, mostly to do with software, computer technology and all that," he says.

"From there I decided to expand my view. Nowadays I do articles on insurance, articles to do with health, I do review articles."

When he started there were some teething problems.

"I didn't have anyone to give me the groundwork, to show me how to bid for the projects, and for example not every buyer or freelancer is honest.

"But after three months I managed to get my act together and it's been pretty easy for me since then."

Mr Otieno had previously worked as a computing teacher, but now earns double his former salary.

He has big plans for the future.

"My ambition is to have a small business out-processing centre where I can expand my operation, I'll put some computers in there and employ some guys and expand my business."

"It has changed my life for the better, and it has given me confidence in terms of being independent."

Family ties John Gotidoc: "I get to see my children grow up every day. I'm able to provide for them"

In the Philippines, around five years ago John Gotidoc faced a choice few fathers would want to be faced with.

In order to send his five children to school he needed to find an alternative source of income.

"The norm here is if you want to earn more you have to go abroad, you have to go overseas and look for jobs elsewhere.

"Well, the thought of just leaving my children and family behind was unbearable. To leave my children for the sake of money.

"I thought that there has to be some other option that I can do."

Freelancing has allowed him to remain at home with his children, and still provide for the family, he says.

"And the best thing is that I don't contribute to pollution. I don't go to work, I don't use the car, I have a home office.

Disruptive practices

Matt Barrie is the chief executive officer of Freelancer.com, the world's largest website of its kind. The Australian bought the site in 2009, before embarking on a large expansion process.

Matt Barrie: "The majority of the world's population actually survive on $200-300 a month"

He feels that the growth of services like this is inevitable.

"If you look at the Philippines for example, in 2009 there were 8 million people out of 100 million people on the internet.

"In 2010 there were 30m million. And 25 million had Facebook accounts.

"The internet is disrupting the global labour markets."

It isn't hard to see why, he says.

"If you work in call centres in these countries, your starting salary is around $240. If you have a degree. This is a white collar, middle class job."

As to the knock-on effect for the developed world, Mr Barrie is unapologetic.

"To be frank, it's mostly low-paid jobs that are being out-sourced.

"Technology is inherently disruptive. We're not causing this, it's the internet that's causing this by breaking down barriers."

Big plans

The bigger argument over the rights and wrongs of outsourcing will continue.

But for people like Sangeeta Thomas, this type of work has, she says, been life-changing.

"I cannot express in words how much happiness this site has given to me.

"I'm able to make a good income from home and at the same time I'm able to contribute to the family, help my husband, take care of my babies."

Four months ago, Mrs Thomas gave birth to twin boys. She's working less, but has big plans for when they start playschool.

"I want to start a copywriting company of my own, give work to housewives like me who want to work from home.

"I want to help a few friends, women who want to work and help their families," she says.

"Talks are on now for that. I have many regular clients who know I'm capable of providing quality work."

Comcast offers low-income families $9.95 a month Internet

Some low-income families struggling to pay $30 for Comcast's cable Internet service may qualify for a $9.95-a-month plan from the company, which offers service in 39 states.

Comcast's "Internet Essentials" is geared to those who have at least one child that receives free school lunches through the National School Lunch Program. Other criteria include being located where Comcast offers Internet service, not having subscribed to Comcast Internet service within the last 90 days, and not having an overdue Comcast bill or unreturned equipment.

(Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal, a unit of Comcast.)

Among the conditions of the FCC's approval earlier this year of Comcast buying a 51 percent stake in NBC Universal, was that Comcast continue to offer an affordable, standalone broadband option for customers who want Internet access but not cable TV service. Philadelphia-based Comcast has about 23 million cable TV subscribers and nearly 17 million Internet subscribers.

Comcast says it will deliver download speeds of up to 1.5 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 384 Kbps for those in the Internet Essentials program.

Other features will include not having to pay any activation or equipment rental fees, "never" having any price increases as long as you qualify for the program, and being able to buy a computer at "initial enrollment" for $150 plus tax.

'What is your favorite Internet password?'

"What is your favorite Internet password?" Wait! Don't answer that! It's a trick question — because you should be creating unique passwords for the various sites and service you use. For some reason though, one website seems to think otherwise.

The UPSJobs website doesn't have passwords at all; instead, it forces you to select a single sign-in question. UPSJobs "actually encourages you not to use a unique password, but instead to use a password that other people might be able to guess (such as the name of your most loved pet or movie)," says a report by security firm Sophos.

One such question, which made the Sophos folks chuckle disapprovingly, was the one above.

"You shouldn't have a favorite Internet password," says the Sophos researcher, explaining that proper security means having a distinct password for every online account you use. 

"Oh, but I can be tricky and still have a secure answer! I'll just include a few random characters such as exclamation marks," you might be thinking right now, but a researcher at Sophos has some bad news for you:

It actually gets worse. When I first created a profile on UPSJobs, and tried to use a half-decent password (one that contained extended characters such as exclamation marks, and dollar signs), the site wouldn't accept it as my password.

Again, by refusing to accept a more complex password they were actively encouraging me to choose a simpler, easier-to-hack password.

Yikes! Time to rethink your security scheme, UPS!

Pentagon will pay you to be an 'Internet meme tracker'

It's been three days since the potentially iconic image of alleged LulzSec leader "Topiary" — 18-year-old Jake Davis of the Shetland Islands — hit the news. Yet the Internet continues to suffer a dearth of image macros that this kid's face and sunglasses scream for!

Know Your Meme's Don Caldwell pointed me toward an anemic area on the Memes Research Forum in which one commentor suggested: " 'Deal with it' is written all over his sunglasses … It’s glorious." But at the time of this post, hardly any work's been done beyond a few generated by the "Free Topiary" community.  (C'mon, Interwebs! If that was Keanu Reeves, you'd be all over it!)

Rather than suspecting the crowd-sourced creativity that brought us LOLCats and Princess Beatrice's big dumb Cuthulu hat on pretty much everything, I choose to suspect it's the government stopping the meme flow. The ongoing international LulzSec and Anonymous-related arrests reveal the the government is obviously hanging out in cyberspace. Further, the Pentagon is offering $42 million in funding to researchers to help develop its Social Media in Strategic Communications program, the New York Times reports:

As social media play increasingly large roles in fomenting unrest in countries like Egypt and Iran, the military wants systems to be able to detect and track the spread of ideas both quickly and on a broad scale. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is soliciting innovative proposals to help build what would be, at its most basic level, an Internet meme tracker.

It is, therefore, necessary to take into account the dynamics of behavior and SMISC is interested in a wide variety of techniques for doing so.

The Internet — it's a tricky place. And it's increasingly trickier to figure out who's doing the tricking.

How to Stay Focused and Handle Frustration When Doing Internet Marketing

As an avid forum poster, I often see posts about how other people have finally quit their jobs to pursue internet marketing. This is great news for them — to finally be their own boss, to have the entire day for themselves, and to start their own business.

On other days, I’ll also run into posts that talk about the difficulties and frustrations of making money online. These are people who have either recently started out or are people who have been at it awhile and haven’t seen the results they have hoped for in the beginning. It usually boils down to a “mentality issue” they have. One that I do see often is a lack of focus and consistency. For example, many people in internet marketing will post something like this:

How do you sit in front of a computer for extended periods of time, all the while staying focused and productive?

I have to say that this seems like the most difficult thing for me.

Basically, I have never been good at focusing. I had terrible grades in high school (much better in college, thank you adderall) due to the fact that I could never sit long enough and focus on words on a paper. Yes, I know, we all have ADD, but for me it has been a real challenge and I’ve come along way.

But now I find myself getting very frustrated because when pent up too long and working too hard , I begin to get restless, anxious, etc. At times, normal situations where I am supposed to be having fun, I find myself distracted. I’ve tried going out and having fun, exercising, etc and find these to be helpful but I think that I need to take some bigger steps to keep a fairly normal life.

So, with all this in mind, how do you stay mentally healthy and productive while spending extended hours in front of a computer screen?

I think many people who start out (or are still doing this) have this problem. It doesn’t matter if you’re an IM veteran like John Chow making six-figures a year or a newbie making a few cents a month from AdSense, we all get the distraction bug from time to time.

The great thing about internet marketing is that anybody from a 16-year old high school teenager to a 50-year old retired construction worker can enter IM, but that’s also like a double-edged sword. Not everybody will have the focus and discipline to pull off a successful business.

I’ve been interested in productivity for a long time and narrowed my niche down to focus.

Questions that I ask are what makes a person able to sit down and write a 6000-word article for five hours straight, compared to a person who has trouble leaving a relevant comment on a blog that takes five minutes to read? Why is it that a person can buy a product and implement it for seven days, while another person can buy a product and totally forget about it after receiving a “seven-minute high” from watching a video clip guaranteeing them $3,000 a month?

These were the questions that I was interested in, not just for internet marketing, but for any kind of work in general.

I can relate to this because as a graduate student, I also faced similar problems with focus. One day I was fed up and decided to go online to search for information regarding how to focus better. However, the search engines listed websites that I felt were irrelevant to focus and had many distracting ads that were counter-intuitive to helping a person focus better.

I decided that I could create an resource, not just one article or a web page, but a website that would be solely dedicated to helping people like ConquistadorO stay mentally healthy, become more productive, and focus better.

Some of the websites that I saw had been there for a decade and if I wanted to see something new out there, then I would have to do it myself and not wait for someone else to create a website on focus. So that’s what I did. In March of 2011, with no budget and no identity, I launched a website to help people focus better.

Just like everybody who begins IM, I had many challenges as well. There are too many gurus out there who want to sell you an “easy way out.” If you’re not careful and you have a credit card, you can be easily swayed into buying product after product, eventually realizing that a month has passed and you’re just stuck in the same place without having gotten anything done.

I think one of the reasons the majority of people get stuck is because starting your own business seems easy and even fun on the surface, you don’t realize how many “hats” you have to wear along the way. Here are some examples of different things you will most likely have to be good at:

Content Building

Creating articles, posts, podcasts, or videos for your audience

Product Creation

Creating or using someone else’s product that fulfills a market’s needs, designing a sales page, and making graphics for product

Website Design

Choosing a website template and tweaking HTML or CSS to make website look more appealing

Search Engine Optimization

Doing on-page SEO, off-page SEO, and building backlinks

Website Promotion

Going on web 2.0 sites like Google+, Facebook, Twitter and building relationships with people in your niche

In the world of IM, at one point or another, you will have to be a creator, a designer, or a promoter. There are so many things that you must be that it’s easy to get overwhelmed and want to do two, three, or all of these things at once. I think this is where people run into most of their frustrations. People are desperate to see results, so they will rush the process by dividing their attention to doing multiple things at once and end up getting nothing done.

When I realized I wanted to buy hosting and a domain name in March of 2011, I began writing nothing but content for the site in the beginning of February.

During March, I set up my website and did web designing. I have always seen myself as a writer, and definitely not a website designer, so looking at any type of code scared me, but I learned by asking experts in forums like WordPress.org and my theme’s forum. Most people are helpful if you just ask.

In April, I researched everything that I could about focus and finished writing an e-book on it. I was able to add it to my website and proud that I was also able to get it out there.

Since May and June, I’ve been trying to do SEO and website promotion including blog commenting, forum posting, and now guest posting.

Sitting down and focusing is difficult for everybody, even more so now since technology is more advanced, making information more easily spread to the world at faster speeds. But like anything else, it takes practice. You are not given a skill by reading a book.

Although I can’t speak for everybody, here are some tips I’ve learned along the way to help me focus better and to help beginners or people who are struggling in IM:

1. Be exactly clear what you want to get out of internet marketing. It could be making $10 a day in passive income or $5,000 a month in passive income; it could be becoming the best blogger in the world in your niche or moving away from your home and not being financially dependent of your parents.

2. Identity your situation right now. Be as honest with yourself here. The closer you are to the truth, the less resistance you will encounter when achieving what you want. For example, I’m a graduate student who is on summer break right now. I realize I will not have this time come September so I know I have to work extra hard now to prevent frustrations that I might face in the fall.

3. Break down your goal in realistic segments. By realistic, I mean taking a chunk of your goal that’s not so easy so that you feel nothing when you accomplish it, but not so hard that it’s impossible to do. You have to find that balance in between. For me, I dedicated one month or about 30 days to either content building, product creation, website design, or SEO.

4. Focus on doing one thing at a time. Once you’ve broken down your goal, the tasks ahead of you should be less intimidating and doable. Get rid of all distractions, and just pay attention to one thing until it’s completed. You’ll be tempted to try and multitask, as it’s part of human nature, but remember that studies have shown multitasking to heavily reduce one’s efficiency. If you fall off track, don’t beat yourself up. Just gently go back to what you were doing. Again, like anything else, this will take practice.

5. Focus on your progress. Progress is everything. People complain because of what they don’t have, but aren’t grateful for what they do have. If you are always worried about what you want in the future but don’t have right now, that is a 100% formula for frustration. Any type of progress you’re doing today is looking at what you have in the present moment and that is a 100% formula for satisfaction. Aim for progress and aim for growth because these are the things that remind you of how far you’ve gone and how much better you can get.

As long as you know where you are right now, know where you want to go, and take action every single day, you’ll eventually reach your goal. You may fail many times, you may have to changes courses, and you may take longer than you first expected, but at least you’ll have results backed up with your actions, and not another story to tell people.

I hope my experiences will help other newbies out there who are currently facing difficulties and frustrations trying to succeed in this crazy world of internet marketing. Stay focused and continue taking action.

Would you give up the Internet for $1 million?

If someone was ready to fork over $1 million to you to stop using the Internet — forever — would you do it?

A not-very-scientific poll by the Fund for American Studies finds the answer to be "no" for two reasons: One, the dollar payoff isn't big enough (!) and two, the Internet has become so key that no amount of money would cover the loss of its place in our lives.

"My whole life practically comes outta there," one man said in an interview shared in the YouTube video above.

Yet another says the amount would have to be "something in excess of $15 (million) to $20 million."

"Couple million, billion," said another.

What would make you give up the Internet?

Southern Methodist University business prof Michael Cox was the one who put the question out there, first with his own students, who told him "you couldn't pay me enough."

Now, no one is offering that kind of dough, for starters, and the Fund for American Studies, a Washington, D.C.-based organization that champions "freedom, individual responsibility and free markets," was trying to make a point with all of this: "In some ways maybe we're all millionaires and billionaires if we have something that's worth that much to us, something that lets us do so much ... you might just be richer than you realize," they say at the end of the video.

But not everyone agrees. Noted one commentor: "Oh man, I am 32 and I would give up the Interwebs for the rest of my life for a quarter million or even less. Not a second of? doubt if someone offered me a million."
