Weather apps are the top apps for Americans with smartphones, according to a new study.
Social networking programs, like mobile Facebook and Twitter, were a close second, and map apps, third, according to comScore, which says its rankings are for the three months ending in May.
With "more than 76.8 million" Americans having smartphones — "up 57 percent from the previous year"— weather apps reached the largest audience: 31 million smartphone owners, comScore said, or "40.4 percent of the total U.S. smartphone audience."
After third-place maps, news and Internet search apps were next in popularity, with 14.9 million American saying they have news apps on their smartphones, and 17.7 million having search apps.
