trafficEvery new blogger today is on the lookout for new ways to get traffic to their blogs but very few of them actually get results from the tips they read from other blogs. At the same time, the big bloggers keep on getting more traffic to their blogs without laboring for more and people start to wonder why that is happening.

If you ask most people why the big bloggers keep getting more traffic to their blog and why new bloggers find it difficult to get traffic they will tell you it is because the big bloggers are already established. Even though that might be part of the reason, it is a very insignificant part. There’s one major secret to big bloggers getting a lot of traffic to their blog and that is because they have realized the key to getting traffic to a blog that most new bloggers are yet to realize.

Have you ever wondered why almost every single article you read on how to get traffic to a blog only list tactics to get traffic and why after following almost all the tactics listed in most of these articles you still can’t figure out why traffic isn’t coming to your blog.

Getting traffic to your blog isn’t all about following tactics such as commenting on other blogs, guest blogging etc. The key to getting more traffic to your blog is having the right strategy. It is all about having the right plan in place.

Instead of just using the latest traffic generation tactics why not use a strategy similar to the one below.

Write Epic Content: Your content is probably the most important thing on your blog and it might as well be the only reason why a lot of people are reading your blog. A very important reason you should focus on writing epic content is because most big bloggers have realized that the key to getting more traffic is writing content that begs to be shared and then focusing on making those readers stick. Your content speaks for you more than any other aspect of your blog. If you write great content that makes anyone who read it feel like you’re really there to help them you wouldn’t find it difficult getting them to stick to your blog.

Have a Friendly Design that Welcomes Readers and Make Your Content Easy to Share: One thing I’ve realized by being a blogger for almost two years now is that the success of your article will be determined not only by its title or points but also by how it is presented. Is it the fonts you use or how attractive your content looks? Every single element of your design can make a whole lot of difference in how people perceive your content.

It is also very important to ensure you make it easy for people to share your content by integrating the right social sharing buttons into your design. I’ve read a lot of great blog posts I didn’t share, not because I didn’t want to share them, but because the blog owner made it difficult for me to share. Focus more attention on increasing the number of people that share your blog posts and you will notice a significant increase in how much traffic you can get.

Design a System to Get those Who Read Your Content to Come Back Again: Now that you’ve written that epic content and a lot of people are starting to share your content you need to realize that a lot more people will visit your blog, and the success of your blog will depend on your ability to retain those new visitors. If you visit the blog of any A-list blogger in your niche you will notice that they have huge subscriber counts – that is because they have realized the importance of getting people to subscribe to their blog.

Make it easy for people to subscribe to your blog, encourage them to subscribe to your blog whenever you write a new article and on the long run a lot more people will be exposed to your content which will lead to a more viral traffic effect.

It’s that Simple

Have you noticed the difference in having a strategy in place compared to just using tactics? There is no point in using tactics to drive traffic to your blog when you can’t retain that traffic.

I’m not trying to say you won’t need tactics to drive traffic even if you have the above strategy in place, but you will be able to make effective use of the tactics to ensure you get more people to visit your blog.

Traffic, what does it mean to you? If you are a blogger then traffic is your livelihood, without it your blog will not last. What you need to understand is traffic is what makes or breaks a blog and that is why doing everything you can to get traffic is essential to making sure your blog gets the following that it needs.

When it comes to getting traffic you need to go where the traffic already is, Google. Everybody uses Google, so why not use one of their own websites to help you get traffic? The two best websites that Google has in order to get traffic are Youtube.com and Blogger.com, for the sake of this article I am going to focus on Blogger to help you get traffic. The reason why Blogger is such a great way to get traffic is because they have a high page rank, lots of viewers each month, it will pass some link juice, and it is very easy to set and forget.

The first thing you need to understand is how to setup a Blogger blog to work the way that you want it to. What I always do is I build a 10 post blog about whatever the topic is that my website is on and then I interlink all the pages together. The trick here is to target 10 different keywords, my advice would be to target keywords with at least 1000 local monthly searches each. The reason why you want this much traffic is because not everyone will go to your site if it is found on the search engines and an even smaller amount of people will click on your link. Just remember that this strategy along with the following 4 tips will get you more free traffic in a short amount of time than you have ever thought possible.

Everybody knows that you need to promote your own site to get traffic but for some odd reason they think they don’t have to promote other blogs or Web 2.0 properties. Trust me, when it comes to getting traffic even Blogger blogs need to be promoted. What I do is I will write articles for article directories and other blogs and I will use 1 link for my Blogger blog and the other link for my actual website. Another thing you can do to promote the blog is to use social bookmarking, it is easy and if done right will actually get you a decent amount of traffic.

Have you ever gone to a website that didn’t have any pictures, videos, or anything other than text? Don’t you get tired of just reading? It has been proven that pictures and videos will keep a reader on your site roughly 37% longer and that is why you need them on your blog. Not only will pictures and videos keep your readers on the site longer but they will also make the site feel more lived in so that it doesn’t just look like it is there acting as a portal to your main site.

If you want to get the most traffic as possible then you need to keep adding content to your Blogger blog. I am not saying you need to write 1 new blog post every day but you at least need to add 1 new post each month. All you need to do is make it look like the site was not forgotten about because search engines dislike sites that never offer any new information.

Do you have more than 1 website that you want to promote? If you have a few websites then you don’t want to use the same Blogger blog for all your sites, build more blogs. People are always looking for a shortcut but when it comes to getting quality traffic there really aren’t any shortcuts.

Do yourself a favor, get out there and see for yourself how powerful this technique is while you are thinking about it. I am not saying that I am the best blogger out there and I know for a fact that I don’t get as much traffic as many other sites out there but I know what works and this is one of those methods.

If you have had experience with Blogger and it is sending you a decent amount of traffic then let us know about your experiences in the comments below.

content driving trafficYes, you read that right!

You can write content that “drives” traffic.

There are very few words that can deeply affect the emotions of a blogger and one of those few words is the word “traffic”. The unfortunate thing is that when it comes to getting traffic to our blogs we’re all used to the idea of using tactics, with little concern for the kind of content we create.

In my experience the best way you can generate traffic to your blog isn’t by guest blogging, it isn’t by blog commenting but it is by something I call “writing for traffic“. If you’re ready to start writing for traffic then read below to get a few tips to help you write content that drives traffic.

If you’ve been in business for more than a few days now then you will have heard the phrase “benefits sells, not features” at least twice, and that statement can’t be far from the truth.

It doesn’t matter how great your article is. It doesn’t matter how many points it contains and it doesn’t matter how many features your article has or how many reasons you give to your readers to make them read it. Ultimately, there is only one thing that matters and that makes your readers decide to even click to read your content – that one thing is the “benefiting factor” they perceive in it.

In case you don’t know yet, I follow only 51 people on Twitter and I see hundreds of post titles in my Twitter stream alone everyday, I’m subscribed to almost 50 blogs via RSS and I also follow people via Facebook. There is just too much content out there than I can read and to make me a reader you need me to read your content.

If you really want to write content that drives traffic then you need to start spending more time on writing great headlines that stand out. Having the perfect headline not only entices a lot of people to click to read your article, it also results in more retweets and shares which results in more people seeing it and more people sharing it.

Old advice, eh? But it works!

In fact, I have written 2 great list posts this month already and both have been viewed by thousands of people.

List posts will always work, as long as you follow my formula to writing it.

Be Smart With Your Title: I know I made a point about having the right title above, but it is very important to pay more attention to it here if you really want your list post to go viral. Don’t just write a list post titled 10 ways to be a better blogger. A lot of people have read countless articles on being a better blogger so there’s little to no chance they will pay attention to it but by having a title like “10 little known ways to be a better blogger” or “10 outstandingly effective ways to be a better blogger” you will be able to get more people to read your list posts.

One thing about my examples though is the use of “key words”. These key words, if used effectively can make a huge difference in people reading your articles or not and a great example of key words in the titles used as examples are “outstandingly effective” and “little known”. You also need to make sure your article delivers on the promises of your headline – don’t tell people you’re giving them little known ways to do something and then give them common tips. The more unique your articles are and the more you over deliver, the more traffic you will be able to get to your list posts.

Format Your Articles with Eye Catching Images: Another tactic I have noticed works well with list posts is the use of effective, eye catching images in the article. The more attractive your images are, the more results you can get from using them.

You should also know that an image speaks a thousand words so don’t for once underestimate the importance of using an image in your article. It doesn’t matter if it took you 30 minutes or 1 hour to find the right images, you will be very happy you spent that time choosing the right images.

If it is great content people will share it, right?

What if they don’t?

This is something especially important depending on your niche. Sometimes we enjoy an article so much that by thinking about taking action on it we forget to share it. A little reminder to share your post might make a whole lot of difference in whether it drives traffic or not. Make sure you have a clear call to action encouraging people to spread the word about your blog post so that others will benefit.

It is also very important to be careful with how you tell people to share your articles. If you tell them to share every single article you write then it would soon become a common thing and they will start giving your call to actions less attention.

How one lazy bum made $176,697.50

Social bookmarking sites these days are powerful marketing tools that SEO content creators can use to drive traffic to their blogs and niche sites. Traffic from social bookmarking sites is a great boost in addition to receiving traffic organically from search engines. If you’ve been in the SEO game for a while now, you probably know that every blogger has their favorite list of social bookmarking sites they think are the best, hands down. You probably even have your own list, but it seems as though everyone has different opinions when it comes to the best social bookmarking sites for driving traffic to your content. Knowing what social bookmarking sites have the potential to drive the most traffic your way is important because bookmarking your content takes up a good amount of your valuable time, even if you minimize this task with automated submitters.

The relevant stats of a social bookmarking site that make for the best possible link back to your content include; Google PageRank, number of inbound links, Alexa Rank and as far as eyeballs looking at your content, you’ll want to concern yourself with the stats on monthly visitors too. Given these criteria, here are the top 5 social bookmarking sites that can get the most visitors in front of your SEO content:

1. Digg

Google PR: 8, Alexa Rank: 284, Inbound links: 267,000,000 and monthly visitors according to Quantcast: 23,900,000.

We all know about Digg – the power of this bookmarking site is truly crazy. Get your content on the first page of Digg and you better hope your servers can handle the tens of thousands of visitors that will be headed your over to your site. The much harder part is getting your content to take off on Digg.

What does well on Digg? Apple related stories, useful tech news, negative stories about corporate corruption, news stories about odd and outlandish crimes, political opinion pieces that are not run of the mill and anything that is simply very quirky, funny or out of the ordinary.

2. Technorati

Google PR: 8, Alexa Rank: 457, Inbound links: 43,000,000 and monthly visitors according to Quantcast: 2,400,000.

Technorati is great because you can actually link you blog up to Technorati, which provides a stream of the latest and greatest in the blogosphere. Get you blog connected with Technorati and all your posts have a chance to be featured on a very high ranked social bookmarking site.
What does well on Technorati? A variety of blogs can do well on Technorati, but how much your content is featured depends on your “Technorati Authority” to a degree, which you must build up over time using their system of guidelines.

3. Del.icio.us

Google PR: 8, Alexa Rank: 2,648, Inbound links: 154,000 and monthly visitors according to Quantcast: 325,000

Another, great highly ranked social bookmarking site that has seen a lot of improvements and grown significantly in the last few years.

What does well on Del.icio.us? According to some analytical reviews, about 50 percent of Del.icio.us top ranking stories are about anything tech, 8 percent are about business and making money; 8 percent are tutorials of some sort or how-tos and 7 percent are simply offbeat, lifestyle stories. The rest are broken down into much smaller, various categories.

4. StumbleUpon

Google PR: 8, Alexa Rank: 939, Inbound links: 119,000,000 and monthly visitors according to Quantcast: 978,000

StumbleUpon is another great social bookmarking site – just use it yourself and you’ll soon find how addicting “stumbling” can be. You can “stumble” or bookmark your own content and review it yourself to get more hits from StumbleUpon. However, only “stumble” your best, most original content, as “stumbling” too much content that sounds the same or like it’s trying to sell something, will cause you to get kicked out from bookmarking content on this site.

What does well on StumbleUpon? This site is really the most diverse content wise; all sorts of topics can do well here. However, the top categories of topics are technology and off beat.

5. Reddit

Google PR: 8, Alexa Rank: 4,815, Inbound links: 3,807,418 and monthly visitors according to Quantcast: 1,200,000

Reddit has millions of loyal, tech loving, quirky users. Just post an interesting enough question in the AskReddit forum, and you could find your question and its comments on the first page of Reddit’s “what’s hot” section.

What does well on Reddit? Politics, news, science and programming.

Remember getting huge amounts of traffic from these bookmarking sites or any bookmarking site for that matter, means getting on the front page. This involves writing on certain, popular topics, but mainly creating stellar content that people just have to click on and share.

Earphones A music body wants online search results to steer fans to legal download sites.

The Performing Rights Society (PRS) For Music wants search engines to show which sites offer content illegally.

Links to sites that offer legal downloads would get green tags, while links to illegal download sites would be flagged in red.

The PRS says the new system is needed as some people don't know when they're illegally downloading.

"There is evidence out there that if you help people go in the right direction many of them will do," said Robert Ashcroft, boss of PRS For Music.

'Right thing'

"We're concerned about piracy, there are many things we can do about it, but we should start by telling people what is licensed and what is not licensed.

"We're not trying to stop people, this isn't a legal action, this isn't site blocking.

Screenshot of proposed plan PRS are proposing search results are flagged with 'traffic lights'

"This is an information to consumers and I think that many people want to do the right thing.

"I say watch this space - I would like to see something happen before the end of the year," he added.

The technology has already been developed and could be deployed at short notice.

But the proposal has had a mixed reaction from artists and music fans.

Wretch 32, the rapper who scored a number one single with his track Unorthodox earlier this year, said he understood why PRS are doing this.

But he thinks the plan is flawed.

"I think 98% [of people] are aware of where they're getting it from.

"Everyone has got their way of obtaining music - I think people who download [illegally]... they just download.

"They know exactly where they're going and that's just what they do."

Adam Gibblin is 23 and from London.

Adam Gibblin Adam Gibblin, from Northwood, says he thinks it's a good idea

He usually listens to his music on iTunes and YouTube but he thinks it's a good idea.

"I think people are quite naive - when you search for something you think it's come up on the internet it must be okay. You just use it.

"It'd make you think about it and consider what you're doing."

PRS for Music will now need to convince anti-virus software providers or most popular search engines to adopt the idea for it to be brought in.

Google, which is by far the biggest search engine in the UK, said it had "no comment" on the plans.

But PRS for Music has had success in negotiating with the internet giant before.

Earlier this year after negotiation between the two parties, Google changed their Autocomplete search feature.

The most recent figures from the UK's recording music body British Phonographic Industry (BPI) said 1.2 billion individual tracks were illegally downloaded last year.
