While there have been numerous speculations and rumors about Apple’s iPhone 5 for months now, it’s only today that we’re getting something more local and close to home.

At least one of the editors of a Philippine newspaper is getting an early look at the upcoming iPhone 5.

I can’t categorically reveal the name and newspaper for fear that it would get them into trouble with Apple. Besides, there’s an NDA to be signed. You know Apple is super-strict about these kinds of stuff.

The review unit cannot be published nor shared or revealed publicly within the two-week period before it is announced. That should give us an idea that Apple will officially announce the iPhone 5 in 2 or 3 weeks time.

In a related news, Deutsche Telekom in Germany has actually confirmed pre-orders for the yet-to-be announced iPhone 5.

BGR also leaked a document from Best Buy outlining product introduction of the iPhone 5 with pre-order starting 1st week of October.

We all know Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal and David Pogue of the New York Times also get iPhone review units a week or two before they are announced/released.

So here’s the likely scenario — iPhone 5 announcement later this September with launch and release from Globe Telecom by October.

Apple

For one day only, today, you can walk away with a new iPhone 3GS for free when you sign up for a two-year contract with AT&T at Best Buy.

An anonymous tipster sent a photo of a promotional sign to TechnoBuffalo that shows such a deal and calls to Best Buy confirmed it. So if you've wanted to dip your toes into the Apple iPhone, now may be the time. Of course, the iPhone 5 is imminent, if you believe the rumors, and the iPhone 4 is already everywhere, but if you're ok with being just a little behind the curve and being locked into two years with AT&T, this may be a deal for you.

If you don't buy today at Best Buy, you can still find a good deal, though it won't be free. A new iPhone 3GS will normally cost you $49 with a two-year AT&T contract, while an iPhone 4 will run you at least $199.

 Apple

Not even two weeks have passed since Apple issued a security fix for iOS devices and we're already being prompted to update our gadgets again. The latest software download, iOS 4.3.5, is a minor update which fixes yet another rather pesky security vulnerability.

While Apple's description of the security update is a bit vague — it simply explains that if you don't download iOS 4.3.5, "an attacker with a privileged network position may capture or modify data in sessions protected by SSL/TLS" — the folks at Kaspersky Labs were able to clarify things a bit:

[T]he description implies that an attacker who has already compromised a machine on a given network and has the ability to see and identify SSL sessions might be able to decrypt the traffic and modify it. This kind of man-in-the-middle attack is quite common and would require the attacker to already have a foothold on the network in order to execute it.

In plainer words: Someone could intercept your web-surfing session and steal data — but only if he or she already has access to the network you're using.

You can get the update which will foil any plots to compromise your security in such a manner by plugging your iOS device into your computer and hitting the "check for updates" button in iTunes.

Do note that the 4.3.5 version is intended for the AT&T iPhone 4, the iPhone 3GS, the iPad 2, the iPad as well as third and fourth generation iPod Touch devices. Folks who own a Verizon iPhone 4 will find an update labeled 4.2.10instead — but it'll offer the same fix.

Not like what happened to iPhone 4 last year, early iPhone 5 leaks seem to be coming straight from the very place where it is being assembled.

We have 3 new photos of the supposed next generation Apple iPhone, the one that will supersede iPhone 4, all coming from China --

This one was leaked by a company that makes FM Transmitter units for iPhone

This photo, on the other hand, is from a company that makes silicon cases for various handsets made in China.

So what do these photos tell us?

1. The next generation iPhone, which some are already calling iPhone5 or iPhone4s, will have a bigger screen compared to its predecessor and a thinner bezel around the display.

2. iPhone5 will still have a clickable hardware Home button as opposed to earlier rumors that it will have a touch-sensitive home button or a trackpad.

3. The LED flash will be re-positioned farther from the camera lens, which will perhaps result to less overexposure in images.

TP Thoughts

At this point, I believe it's safe to say that Apple's competitors have managed to come up with handsets that not only have better specifications compared to iPhone4 but also have a more pocket-friendly price tag. LG Optimus Black, for example, a mere mid-range release from the Korean company has tech specs which are superior to Apple's flagship phone. Currently, with iPhone4, I think Apple is hardly the handset manufacturer all other companies are looking at.

The next generation iPhone offers Apple another opportunity to show the world that the company doesn't just follow trends but instead continues to set the standard by which we judge a good smartphone. That said, iPhone5 or iPhone4s (whatever it will be called eventually) has to be either better than all other flagship phones out in the market tech-specs-wise or it has to come with innovations never before seen in smartphones.
