Newsbeat technology reporter Florence Welch Florence Welch performed at a concert in east London on Tuesday night Visits to video-sharing websites by UK users have gone up by more than a third in the last year.

The biggest driver of traffic to those sites is music videos (33%), followed by TV shows (17%), film (11%), gaming (10%) and news (9%).

The figures, from internet research company Experian Hitwise, show YouTube accounts for nearly 70% of all video website hits.

It's now the third most popular site in the UK after Google and Facebook.

Lady Gaga was the most in demand for artist within music searches.

Florence Welch, from Florence and the Machine, said the site was also a benefit in providing inspiration to songwriters.

She says: "I became really obsessed with watching Otis Reading, Sam and Dave, clips from the '60s and the Lana Del Rey videos recently.

"YouTube is a huge thing for me to find songs, it's an amazing thing and full of the most random songs.

"I think for finding random stuff and seeing new things it's really useful".

'800 million hours'

The research was gathered between September 2010 and September 2011.

During that time 240 million hours every month were spent by British internet users watching videos online.

Illustrating its dominance in this area, Google owned YouTube, clocked up 184 million of those hours.

That number is still dwarfed by the amount of time spent on social networking sites though.

The same research shows 800 million hours were spent each month on sites like Facebook and Twitter by the UK's internet users.

Despite YouTube's dominance of video sharing websites there was also strong growth for other ones too.

BBC iPlayer, the second most popular video site, experienced a 22% rise in traffic last year.

That means the number of visits to the site has doubled in the last three years.

10 September 2011 Last updated at 19:12 GMT By Martin Vennard BBC News Samantha Cameron, David Cameron David Cameron has spoken of his love of British music and food at a festival in his Oxfordshire constituency.

The prime minister was at the event on the farm of Blur bassist turned cheese producer Alex James on Saturday, just a few miles from his home.

It brings together leading bands and celebrity chefs.

Mr Cameron said he was looking forward to seeing the Kooks headlining on Saturday night at the festival, Alex James Presents Harvest.

"Twenty years ago no one would have thought about having a British food festival, but that's a very important part of Britain today," Mr Cameron said.

"We produce some of the best food in the world and also we should be proud of our chefs and restaurants."

He added: "Food is a good reason for coming to Britain and who would have said that 20 years ago?

"I think it's probably a unique event.

"I'm not sure anyone else has tried it quite like this and Alex James, who's been the driving force behind this, mixes his two interests - the fantastic career he's had with Blur, but at the same time he's passionate about food and local produce, and here we are on his farm."

Straw bale

Mr Cameron was at the festival with his wife Samantha and three children.

I'm off to Russia tomorrow night and so I've got a lot on my plate at the moment and this is a bit of down-time ”

End Quote David Cameron He was also seen talking to Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson and comedian Harry Enfield, two of the other guests at the event.

He said of Alex James's own produce: "I've had his cheese and I'm just about about to go and have another go at it right now."

However, Mr Cameron said he and his family had Mexican food for lunch at the festival.

"It's a lovely day for the family and I've got my three children and we're having a great time," he said.

"The mixture of food and music is a great one and there are plenty of things for the children to do," Mr Cameron said, as he perched on a straw bale, in front of the main stage, which was part of a maze for children to play on.

"I'm off to Russia tomorrow night and so I've got a lot on my plate at the moment and this is a bit of down-time with the children."

He added: "I've been to a few Cornbury festivals just down the road. I went there last year. I watch Glastonbury on the TV. That's the right way to do that one."

Other artists appearing at the festival include KT Tunstall and the Christians, while Hugh-Fearnley Whittingstall and Rachel Allen are among the chefs. A sister festival - Harvest at Jimmy's, hosted by Jimmy Doherty - is taking place in Suffolk.

Check out how two different bands formed a unique chemistry in the latest episode of “Volume Up!”

In my previous Volume Up article, we checked out the music video for Callalily‘s “Liwanag” and Kiss Jane‘s “Lagi” to have an idea on what the two songs will sound like when mashed together. We also took a peek on their rehearsals to see if the two bands get along well.

Based from the last episode of Volume Up on MYX (you can watch the previous episodes here), Callalily and Kiss Jane had a blast in working for the mash-up of their hits “Liwanag” and “Lagi.” As we all know, it’s important for two artists to jive and click during the rehearsals in order to mash-up their songs properly and the two bands did just that.

Excited to hear the mash-up? It’s quite intriguing what would be the product of two songs joined together, right? And what would be the sound of Kean Cipriano‘s take on Kiss Jane‘s “Lagi” and Jacq‘s take on Callalily‘s “Liwanag”?

You can have an idea if you watch the following episodes of Volume Up:

Episode 8

Part 1, Part 2, Part 3

Episode 9

Part 1, Part 2, Part 3

On the said episodes, Callalily and Kiss Jane also shared the lessons that they’ve learned during their mash-up session. And with the chemistry that they’ve formed, Kean Cipriano said that if Callalily would be given a chance to work with Kiss Jane again, he is hoping to have a duet number with the band’s lead singer Jacq. And perhaps it might develop into “playing sweet music together” which is another story, I must say.

So without further ado, here is the highly-anticipated mash-up of Callalily and Kiss Jane for the Coca-Cola Music Studio Volume Up! (CLICK HERE to watch the video)

Don’t miss an episode of Volume Up, The Coca-Cola Music Studio, which airs 5:30 to 6:00pm every Sunday on MYX, with replays on Tuesday at 7:30 to 8:00pm. You can also check out previous Volume Up episodes anytime you want via the official website of the Coca-Cola Music Studio: http://musicstudio.coca-cola.com.ph.

On August 28, 2011 a “celebration” is going to happen!

As a prelude to National Heroes Day, Choose Philippines, the world’s first ever social network where you can share and post your discoveries around the Philippines, will launch its music video “Piliin Mo ang Pilipinas” on “ASAP Rocks”, the top-rated variety show of ABS-CBN.

The Choose Philippines music video will features its theme song, “Piliin Mo ang Pilipinas” as sung by artists Angeline Quinto and Vince Bueno. The song was written by Robert Labayen, of “Bro Star ng Pasko” fame.

Choose Philippines (www.choosephils.com) aims to feature the undiscovered Philippines by showcasing travel destinations, regional cuisine, local culture and the colorful fiestas and festivals. There is also an active community page on Facebook that has gathered more than 220,500 “likes” in less than a year and still growing rapidly every day.

“Piliin Mo ang Pilipinas” is a reminder of the many reasons to be proud of the Philippines. The music video not only captures the vibrant colors of the islands but is also a call to action for every Filipino to proudly share the beauty of the Philippines to the world.

The website only went live last April 15 but it has already generated hundreds of photos and articles from Filipinos in various regions and from all over the world.

After their success in ABS-CBN’s 2011 Summer Station ID Jingle, Angeline Quinto and Vincent Bueno are once again reunited for the Choose Philippines theme song.

Only 21, Angeline Quinto exemplifies the Filipino penchant for hard work and overcoming adversity. The perseverance of “Star Power: The Search for the Next Pop Superstar” grand winner is definitely paying off. Angeline just returned from her US Tour with Sharon Cuneta and had her solo concert at the SM Sky Dome.

Vince Bueno is the face of a new generation of Pinoys who are born and raised overseas yet have decided to rediscover their roots in their homeland. Born in Vienna, Vince made a name for himself in Austria by being the grand champion of “Musical! Die Show!” yet chose to continue his career here in the Philippines.

The lyrics for “Piliin Mo…” were written by Robert Labayen, the vice president of ABS-CBN’s Creative Communications Management (CCM). He is the man behind many Station IDs, the most recent being the “BidaBest sa Tag-Araw” 2011 Summer ID as well many memorable advertising campaigns.

Choose Philippines is all about going out there, discover new things and have fun while doing it!

Choose Philippines is encouraging Filipino residents and our foreign visitors to register on the website (it’s easy and it’s FREE!) and share their experiences.

We would love to hear about their travels, adventures and misadventures in their very own words: Where did they go? What can we expect (scary insects, tidal waves, the best places to eat, etc)? What do we need to bring (sandals instead of shoes, anti-mosquito lotion, etc)? How to get there and how much? Also a bit of trivia and local flavor about the place would be fantastic!

We also invite Choose Philippines users to email us their beautiful photos (high-resolution would be best!) and a short “caption-like” article about these images.

Story and photo contributions can be emailed to choosephils@gmail.com.

And please “like” our fan page “Choose Philippines” on Facebook. Invite as many of your friends to do the same! Just by doing this you are already making a difference for our country! Choose us! Choose Philippines!

29 July 2011 Last updated at 10:14 GMT Spotify on an iPhone, Spotify Spotify launched its service in the US in mid-July Music service Spotify is being sued in the US and Europe for allegedly violating patents held by PacketVideo.

The lawsuit claims that Spotify has violated at least two patents owned by PacketVideo that cover methods of streaming music over data networks.

The legal action comes barely two weeks after Spotify launched a US version of its music streaming service.

UK-based Spotify said it would "strongly contest" the claims PacketVideo made in its lawsuit.

Tangled patents

Court papers that kicked off the legal action were filed by PacketVideo lawyers on 28 July. The patents in question were filed in 1995 and became the property of PacketVideo when it bought Swiss-based SDC AG in 2007.

PacketVideo has filed legal papers in San Diego and the Netherlands. It said the lawsuit had been filed following attempts to "amicably resolve" the dispute over the patents outside the court.

"PacketVideo has a strong intellectual property portfolio, and will take any necessary action needed to protect its intellectual property and prevent the misuse of its patents," said Joel Espelien, PacketVideo's general counsel in a statement.

In response, Spotify said in a statement that its success was due to its "highly innovative, proprietary hybrid technology that incorporates peer-to-peer technology".

"PacketVideo is claiming that by distributing music over the internet, Spotify (and by inference any other similar digital music service) has infringed one of the patents that has previously been acquired by PacketVideo," it added. "Spotify is strongly contesting PacketVideo's claim."

The lawsuit is the latest in a growing number of patent wrangles that have set tech firms against each other. Apple, Nokia, HTC, Google, Oracle, Samsung, Electronic Arts, AT&T and many others are all fighting or have launched, sometimes simultaneously, legal action over patents.

In addition, many firms who claim to own patents but have never turned them into working code or gadgets are also suing tech firms for infringing on their intellectual property.

The situation led Kent Walker, Google's top lawyer, to decry the "explosion in patent litigation" which "threatens to stifle innovation".

Earphones A music body wants online search results to steer fans to legal download sites.

The Performing Rights Society (PRS) For Music wants search engines to show which sites offer content illegally.

Links to sites that offer legal downloads would get green tags, while links to illegal download sites would be flagged in red.

The PRS says the new system is needed as some people don't know when they're illegally downloading.

"There is evidence out there that if you help people go in the right direction many of them will do," said Robert Ashcroft, boss of PRS For Music.

'Right thing'

"We're concerned about piracy, there are many things we can do about it, but we should start by telling people what is licensed and what is not licensed.

"We're not trying to stop people, this isn't a legal action, this isn't site blocking.

Screenshot of proposed plan PRS are proposing search results are flagged with 'traffic lights'

"This is an information to consumers and I think that many people want to do the right thing.

"I say watch this space - I would like to see something happen before the end of the year," he added.

The technology has already been developed and could be deployed at short notice.

But the proposal has had a mixed reaction from artists and music fans.

Wretch 32, the rapper who scored a number one single with his track Unorthodox earlier this year, said he understood why PRS are doing this.

But he thinks the plan is flawed.

"I think 98% [of people] are aware of where they're getting it from.

"Everyone has got their way of obtaining music - I think people who download [illegally]... they just download.

"They know exactly where they're going and that's just what they do."

Adam Gibblin is 23 and from London.

Adam Gibblin Adam Gibblin, from Northwood, says he thinks it's a good idea

He usually listens to his music on iTunes and YouTube but he thinks it's a good idea.

"I think people are quite naive - when you search for something you think it's come up on the internet it must be okay. You just use it.

"It'd make you think about it and consider what you're doing."

PRS for Music will now need to convince anti-virus software providers or most popular search engines to adopt the idea for it to be brought in.

Google, which is by far the biggest search engine in the UK, said it had "no comment" on the plans.

But PRS for Music has had success in negotiating with the internet giant before.

Earlier this year after negotiation between the two parties, Google changed their Autocomplete search feature.

The most recent figures from the UK's recording music body British Phonographic Industry (BPI) said 1.2 billion individual tracks were illegally downloaded last year.

Baidu has often been accused of not doing enough to protect copyrights and intellectual property Chinese search engine Baidu has struck a deal with leading music labels ending years of legal wrangling over rights.

Baidu signed an agreement with a joint venture owned by Universal Music, Warner Music and Sony Music to distribute music through its mp3 search service.

Baidu, China's biggest search engine, will pay the owners of the music rights on a per-play and per-download basis.

China is the world's biggest internet market with close to 470 million users.

Baidu has been involved in legal tussle with the music labels. It has been accused of steering consumers to third-party websites where pirated material is hosted.

However, the company said that all outstanding litigation between the parties involved had ended as part of the deal.

Baidu, the Chinese music fans, recording artists and the record companies will all benefit from this win-win partnership”

End Quote Jennifer Li Baidu Baidu has a near-75% share of China's search engine market.

Analysts said the deal was likely to help the company strengthen its position even further, as the Chinese internet market grew and more users were added,

"It [the deal] will be very positive for Baidu in terms of user experience and it also fits in with Baidu's box computing strategy, which is to make a lot of information available on the Baidu site," said Dick Wei of JP Morgan.

While the deal sees the end of a long legal tussle for Baidu, it also opens up extra revenue streams for music companies who have often complained of seeing their profits hit by piracy.

"Baidu, the Chinese music fans, recording artists and the record companies will all benefit from this win-win partnership," said Jennifer Li, chief financial officer of Baidu.

However, some analysts warned that although the deal was a step in the right direction, it may increase Baidu's cost of operations in the short term.

"I think there will be a higher cost involved and I am not very sure they can generate the revenue," said Wallace Cheung of Credit Suisse.

Baidu said it was in the process of uploading the music catalogues onto its servers.
