26 October 2011 Last updated at 20:38 GMT RIM's PlayBook tablet computer RIM had hoped the update would help drive sales of the PlayBook over the holiday season The maker of the Blackberry PlayBook has delayed an update to the tablet computer's operating system until next year.

Research In Motion said it expects to deliver the software in February. It had been due this month.

RIM has admitted that sales of the device are lower than it anticipated. It acknowledged customers want native email, calendar and contacts applications.

The update aims to add the features.

A company blog described the decision as "difficult", but promised the revision will allow the firm's phones and PlayBooks "to work together even better".

RIM's shares closed down 7.5% on the news.

Instant messaging

At present users cannot access their Blackberry email through the tablet computers unless the devices are linked to one of the firm's smartphones using its Bridge software.

The Canadian firm also said it had taken the decision to defer the inclusion of a BBM instant messaging application until a later release.

However, RIM said it was still planning to offer businesses the ability to manage their employees' tablets from a centralised computer server and to offer workers custom-built applications through the Blackberry App World store in its OS 2.0 download.

Analysts said the news may prove damaging to sales over the holiday season.

"It is a big setback for them. When they launched the tablet they tried to walk the line between a consumer device and an enterprise device," said Jon Erensen, research director at the technology specialists Gartner.

"People were hoping the initial limitations would be corrected with the update by now. The delay means they fall even further behind."

Windows Phone will add more sophisticated speech-to-text features that will let you do all your commands for calls, text messages and instant messages using your Bluetooth headset when you're driving.

"It’s handy even when you’re not driving since it can slash the time you spend typing," wrote Bill Pardi on Windows Phone Blog. The improved speech-to-text features will be added as part of Windows Phone's update this fall. The update, known as Mango, reportedly will add more than 500 new features to the mobile operating system. (Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft Corp. and NBC Universal.)

Right now, Windows Phone lets you use Bluetooth to make calls via the headset, but the advanced features will also let users do these things, according to Pardi:

Make a phone call by name or nicknameRedial a numberCall voicemailSearch BingTurn on the speakerphoneStart an app while in a callNavigate Maps

Alex Perez Avila, a Windows Phone program manager, said on the blog he believes these features will help set Windows Phone "apart" from the crowd. Windows Phone uses Microsoft's Tellme cloud service for voice recognition and transcription: "No one else has it," he said, "and we think customers are really going to like it."

Others who have previewed the Mango update agree. "???Watch out Apple, Google: Windows Phone's Next Big Update Is An Absolute Home Run," said Business Insider.

Update: Skype has pulled its iPad app from the App Store. The company says that the app went live prematurely.

-

Skype has released its official iPad app to the iOS App Store, bringing its live video service to both 3G and Wi-Fi data connections.

Skype for iPad, which has begun rolling out in app stores across the world, expands upon the iPhone app’s features, thanks to the iPad’s larger screen real estate. The iPad app includes all of the features you’d expect: video chat, instant messaging, phone calls and quick access to your contacts. Unlike the iPhone app, instant messaging can be used during video calls.

The Skype app works with both the iPad 1 and the iPad 2, although the iPad 1 only can receive video, as one might expect. The Skype iPad app can call anybody using Skype, whether it’s on the desktop or an iOS device. It requires iOS 4.0 or above.

We’re playing around with the app now, and we’ll have know more updates once we’ve had a chance to make a few calls.

 Apple

Not even two weeks have passed since Apple issued a security fix for iOS devices and we're already being prompted to update our gadgets again. The latest software download, iOS 4.3.5, is a minor update which fixes yet another rather pesky security vulnerability.

While Apple's description of the security update is a bit vague — it simply explains that if you don't download iOS 4.3.5, "an attacker with a privileged network position may capture or modify data in sessions protected by SSL/TLS" — the folks at Kaspersky Labs were able to clarify things a bit:

[T]he description implies that an attacker who has already compromised a machine on a given network and has the ability to see and identify SSL sessions might be able to decrypt the traffic and modify it. This kind of man-in-the-middle attack is quite common and would require the attacker to already have a foothold on the network in order to execute it.

In plainer words: Someone could intercept your web-surfing session and steal data — but only if he or she already has access to the network you're using.

You can get the update which will foil any plots to compromise your security in such a manner by plugging your iOS device into your computer and hitting the "check for updates" button in iTunes.

Do note that the 4.3.5 version is intended for the AT&T iPhone 4, the iPhone 3GS, the iPad 2, the iPad as well as third and fourth generation iPod Touch devices. Folks who own a Verizon iPhone 4 will find an update labeled 4.2.10instead — but it'll offer the same fix.
