Florence Welch performed at a concert in east London on Tuesday night Visits to video-sharing websites by UK users have gone up by more than a third in the last year. The biggest driver of traffic to those sites is music videos (33%), followed by TV shows (17%), film (11%), gaming (10%) and news (9%).
The figures, from internet research company Experian Hitwise, show YouTube accounts for nearly 70% of all video website hits.
It's now the third most popular site in the UK after Google and Facebook.
Lady Gaga was the most in demand for artist within music searches.
Florence Welch, from Florence and the Machine, said the site was also a benefit in providing inspiration to songwriters.
She says: "I became really obsessed with watching Otis Reading, Sam and Dave, clips from the '60s and the Lana Del Rey videos recently.
"YouTube is a huge thing for me to find songs, it's an amazing thing and full of the most random songs.
"I think for finding random stuff and seeing new things it's really useful".
'800 million hours'The research was gathered between September 2010 and September 2011.
During that time 240 million hours every month were spent by British internet users watching videos online.
Illustrating its dominance in this area, Google owned YouTube, clocked up 184 million of those hours.
That number is still dwarfed by the amount of time spent on social networking sites though.
The same research shows 800 million hours were spent each month on sites like Facebook and Twitter by the UK's internet users.
Despite YouTube's dominance of video sharing websites there was also strong growth for other ones too.
BBC iPlayer, the second most popular video site, experienced a 22% rise in traffic last year.
That means the number of visits to the site has doubled in the last three years.

The production of the gruesome “animal crush videos” is about to become a criminal offense in the Philippines with penalty of up to 7 years in prison.
Yesterday, we published PETA’s press release about the producers of animal crush videos in the country namely Dorma “Chita” Ridon and her husband, Vic Ridon, who are allegedly forcing underage girls to participate in the torture and killing of animals in gruesome ‘fetish’ videos that’s being sold on the internet (CLICK HERE for related article).
The couple were charged with violations of child abuse, animal welfare, human trafficking, and wildlife protection laws and the animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is offering a P100,000-reward for information leading to their arrest.
Awareness about the gruesome production of these “crush” videos are necessary to stop animal cruelty in exchange for money that’s why Buhay party-list Rep. Irwin Tieng is proposing a bill that would criminalize the sale of animal crush videos and other filmed acts of animal cruelty in the Philippines.
House Bill 4595, prohibits Filipinos from “knowingly selling, marketing, advertising, exchanging or distributing” the videos, which Rep. Tieng publicly denounces as “an extreme form of animal cruelty.”
“It is hard to believe that this sort of thing even exists, and that a law is needed to prevent it. Animal torture is outrageously disturbing. Common decency and morality dictates that those engaged in it should not be profiting from it; they should be imprisoned,” he added.
If passed, violators will be penalized with imprisonment of 3 to 7 years and/or a fine of up to P300,000.
Rep. Tieng continued, “While this torture of defenseless animals is in itself despicable, numerous studies also show cruelty to animals is often the first step leading to violence against people. This law is one step toward ending this cycle of violence.”
Some sick individuals from different countries are paying as much as $1,000 to watch videos of underage girls torturing and killing animals like dogs, cats, rabbits and even monkeys.
Here are some screengrabs from the said videos as provided by PETA to Starmometer:

Anyone with information about the whereabouts of Dorma and Vic Ridon and other sick people producing or selling “crush videos” is encouraged to call or text PETA at 0999-888-PETA [7382]. All callers will be given anonymity if requested.

The rise of kitty videos, baby pictures and other cuteness on the Internet is now explained by our hardwired instinct to share when we care.
Jonah Lehrer writes at the Wall Street Journal about a study by a Wharton prof, Jonah Berger, which showed that when people are emotionally tickled or rattled, they're much more likely to share news.
It all comes down to a primal instinct. Psychologists will tell us that when we're scared, amazed, or angry, our first response is to reach out to other human beings. "If I'm angry, and then you get angry, we can bond over what we're feeling," Berger told Lehrer.
On the Internet, this is harder to do, so people scratch that same impulse by popping the link in an email and sharing it around.
The "Charlie Bit My Finger — Again!" video, above, with 350 million views now is a prime example, Lehrer explains. The teething toddler and his cheeky older brother are adorable, and go through a rainbow spectrum of emotions through the 56-second vid.
Our empathetic selves follow along as we watch, experiencing the same hormonal flushes and ebbs that make the kids happy, angry, and gleeful. That's when the ache to share hits, and before we know it, we're sharing links on Google+ and Facebook pages and tweeting madly.
Finally, evidence that cuteness is contagious.
