This brings us to the last in the series on the keys to success. The Will. Each article I’ve written in this series have given me a greater understanding of what goes into creating success, but as I come to this last one, I’ve decided that I may have gotten it all backwards. You decide.

Used as a noun, as in this case, it means:

1. the faculty of conscious and especially of deliberate action; the power of control the mind has over its own actions: the freedom of the will.

2. power of choosing one’s own actions: to have a strong or a weak will.

3. the act or process of using or asserting one’s choice; volition.

4. wish or desire: to submit against one’s will.

5. purpose or determination, often hearty or stubborn determination; willfulness: to have the will to succeed.

But where does it come from? Is it simply formed out of desire? Is it conditioned or simply something that just is?

In this case, we will go with it being the desire to do something, the will to succeed. Without having the desire or will to succeed, there’s no driving force to reach for success. You can have determination to do something and discipline to carry out the actions, but if the will isn’t behind you giving those pushes for a specific goal, the rest is futile. Without it you will not develop the mindset or other attributes that go into creating a successful business or blog. This is why I’ve decided it should be first.

There’s an old saying, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.” It basically means if you have the will you will find a way. Finding that way doesn’t always happen overnight. Success takes time.

Another component to success and having the will to succeed is having a strong enough reason “why” you want to succeed. You have to decide why it’s important. It could be money, it could be working from home, it could be to give your family nice vacations. Whatever the reason, that’s the drive behind your will.

As I come to the end of this series, I’m convinced that the will should have been first, without it there’s little reason to develop the other habits or keys to success.

Have you been following this series? What thoughts do you have on it? Do you think the will to succeed should have been first?
